Mary Kate McDevitt
January is the perfect time to learn a new design skill. These curated Skillshare classes will help you get there!

The first artist we curated is Mary Kate McDevitt. She is a letterer and illustrator living and working in Philadelphia, PA. Mary Kate graduated from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia with a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration in 2007. Since graduating, Mary Kate has moved to Portland to Brooklyn and is happily back in Philadelphia. She has been working as a full time freelance letterer since 2010. She has worked for a number of great clients, including Nintendo, Sesame Street, Nike, O Magazine, Chronicle Books and CMYK Magazine and more.

Does your lettering work feel off, but you can't put your finger on why?

Mary Kate McDevitt has been lettering and illustrating for years, constantly refining and improving her work. Over the years, she's learned to critique her own lettering, noticing common mistakes and how to fix them. In this comprehensive 55-minute class, Mary Kate will share her tips to critique your own work and solve students' most common lettering missteps.

In bite-sized lessons, you'll follow Mary Kate through creating a lettering piece from start to finish, considering the 5 flags for self critique as you go. She will point out examples, common issues, and fixes along the way. You'll also watch Mary Kate critique and improve an old piece, providing opportunities to improve your eye.

Whether you're a letterer, designer, illustrator, or enthusiast, you'll gain a set of tools for self-critique to make your work better than ever.

Elizabeth Olwen is a Toronto-based surface designer. Inspired by pastoral beauty, nature in its most playful forms, folklore, and romance, Elizabeth’s work is driven by the desire to leave something beautiful behind with every step she takes.

Her obsession with patterns began as a child when she would become mesmerized by the orange floral drapes in her mother’s kitchen. Surrounded by bold, unapologetic prints, patterns were something that she could lose herself in; a window to faraway places. Through the years, the love of patterns remained, and inspired her to start making her own.

Elizabeth loves old wallpapers and vintage fabrics, cannot be forced to choose a favourite colour, and is hopelessly devoted to travel. She has a growing collection of licensed products available in the market, with clients like TeNeues Publishing, Wallpapered.com, Landor, Cloud9 Fabrics, Target and Madison Park Greetings.
